The Gleaners and I

The movie starts at 3:00 pm
Inspired by Millet’s painting of peasants gathering leftovers after the harvest, legendary director Agnès Varda, at the age of 72, explores gleaning of all kinds. Not only on farms, orchards and vineyards but in urban environments where desperation or ethics or whimsy prompt some to retrieve what others discard. This is much more than an exposé of modern wastefulness. As in the popular Faces, Places Varda injects her bubbly personality into the film and identifies herself as a kind of gleaner. ‘She plucks images and stories from the world around her, finding beauty and nourishment in lives and activities the world prefers to ignore (New York Times).’ We travel around France with someone endlessly curious, good-humoured and humane. Declared by French critics to be the best French film of 2000.
