Charming, stylish, beguiling, laugh-out-loud funny. Find out why critics raved, five Oscars were awarded and audiences were surprised that a modern black-and-white silent film could be hugely entertaining. This loving tribute to the era of silent movies is set in 1920s Hollywood but only the French could have made anything so deft. Jean Dujardin plays a star of swashbuckling films with an oversized ego. He helps a young starlet (Bérènice Bejo) and they fall for each other but as the era of talkies arrives her career takes off while his declines and he loses everything except the devotion of his comical dog and chauffeur (James Cromwell). Comedy, pathos and melodrama combine with a great musical score in ‘an irresistible reminder of nearly everything that makes the movies great’.
