Awarded Gympie Gold at the Heart of Gold ISFF, this uplifting short film takes us on a journey of enlightenment through Tokyo with a Shakespeare fan.
GUEST SPEAKER - ALENA LODKINA
When her debut feature Strange Colours premiered at the Venice International Film Festival, Russian-born Alena Lodkina was recognised as an important emerging talent on the Australian film scene. She has also written, directed and produced documentaries and short film.
In this lyrical and intriguing film, the ‘strange colours’ are those of opals dug from the earth at Lightning Ridge. Psychology student Milena arrives in this remote place because her estranged father is gravely ill. Uncertain about her own direction in life, she finds herself in a community of ‘lost souls’ who have migrated to this harsh environment for a new chance or to escape from their former lives. Russian-born director Alena Lodkina brings a fresh vision to the Australian outback while dispensing with conventional plot clichés. In the words of critic Adrian Martin, ‘this affecting, beautifully judged film . . . marks the arrival in Australian cinema of a major new talent’.
