Spain's most respected contemporary director, 70-year-old Pedro Almodovar has produced his most personal film yet. There are many parallels with his own life as an ageing director, Salvador
Mallo reflects on the choices he's made as the past and present conspire to destroy him. Mallo (played by Antonio Banderas who won Best Actor at Cannes in 2019) is afflicted by the physical debilities of ageing. Prevented from working, he becomes a recluse, sinking into depression. A chance encounter with an old actress friend from the past leads to an exploration of earlier events, relationships and estrangements. The further he delves into the past, the more obsessed he becomes with memories, his mood compounded by the death of his beloved mother. In the words of David Stratton, an 'immensely rewarding film.'
