Master Cheng (2019), which is being compared with Lasse Hallstrom’s Chocolat,  Alfonso Arau’s Like Water for Chocolate and Gabriel Axel’s Babette’s Feast, is a film about the potential of food to bring people of diverse cultures together but is, simultaneously, a gentle-paced, forensically detailed, study of two emotionally wounded people from radically different worlds, rural Finland and urban China, slowly rebuilding their lives after trauma and forming a powerful bond in the process. Laced with dry Nordic humour and set against the stunning Finnish countryside, courtesy of cinematographer Jari Mutikaine, who is as comfortable with sweeping landscapes as with close-ups of faces and mouth-watering food, Master Cheng is directed by Mika Kaurismäki.  Filmed in Finland and China, the dialogue is in Finnish, English and Mandarin with subtitles.
