Mary Anning, the first woman palaeontologist, was born in 1799 in Lyme Regis on the Dorset Coast. As a child she fossicked with her father in the cliffs above the sea, and sold fossils to tourists in the family shop – which Jane Austen visited, requesting a quote for cabinetmaking. Remarkable Creatures and The Fossil Hunter are well-known works describing Mary’s work in the 1820s-1840s and her notable discoveries of Ichthyosaurs and Plesiosaurs; as well as the barefaced theft of her research and samples by the male geologists of the day – treasures now protected in the British Natural History Museum.  Francis Lee (God’s Own Country) directs this fictional account of Mary (Kate Winslet)’s mentorship of a distressed young woman called Charlotte Murchison (Saorise Rohan), which develops into something more personally intense.
